  • I grew up with a one-day tradition, Shel.
Each first Saturday in December, my mom and her good friend whose children and grandchildren dropped in unexpectedly, often with their spouses and extended family, got together and made enough cherry-ruhbarb, blueberry-orange, and apricot-pecan jam to fill dozens of 6 oz. jam jars. (They froze the fruits for months ahead of time.) My job was to make the labels and holiday ribbon ties, and as I grew older I learned to make jam, too.
On Christmas we always had “big hit” jars of jam to put in pretty little sacks and give as special last minute gifts.
I learned then, and have never forgotten, how to “be prepared”–and the jams that were left over were always used later for birthday presents and “thinking of you”–or enjoyed by our family.

  • Great links here, Shel! No doubt you’ll be a lifesaver for many. As for me, I’m ready!
Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a New Year full of peace and joy. xo

We got it done early this year, too – not always our norm, but I think I could get used to it! I sure enjoyed hanging out with you this year, Jill – and look forward to our New Year connection!

  • I’m saving this, Shel, because we are bad at stockings. My Mom’s family never did the fill the stocking thing – come to think of it, neither did my Dad’s. We hung them, but they were more decorative than expectant.
My Daughter is interested in stockings and we do get a few things into hers, but honestly I’m so bad it because of this dearth of experience. And my Husband? Well, the man is Jewish so he hasn’t a clue. But perhaps if we hang on to this, next year we can give the stocking effort a real college try.
    Happy holidays to you!

We always got to “open up” the stockings on Christmas Eve – it was a big deal. There was always a toothbrush and some scotch tape, and a couple of surprises along with the candy and gum. Some year my husband and I only exchange stockings – love getting creative with it! I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season, Lisa!

  • Great last minute tips, Shel! I’ll make sure to pass these on to my hubby who is the King of last minute! LOL. Happy Holidays to you and your family! 🙂

Hmmmm – maybe the computer just happens to be on – cued up to “gifts for her” . . . 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful holiday season, too, Maria – Merry Christmas!
