10 Ways You Can Tell the New Year is Here

With horns tooting, fireworks popping, and Auld Lang Syne blaring off the TV, it’s pretty hard to miss the arrival of the New Year.  But just in case you slept through the hoopla and haven’t heard any official announcement, here’s 10 ways you can tell the New Year is here without leaving your house or looking at a calendar!

1. Your spouse announced you both have new memberships at the local gym. Again.

2. The ads in your junk mail are for White Sales instead of toys and electronics.

3. Magazines, newspapers, and your toiletries are organized in baskets and colorful containers that have suddenly appeared.

4. You hear: “Is this deductible?” a lot.

5. The refrigerator is full of good-for-you stuff.

6. You’re the only one in your neighborhood that still has Christmas lights on at night.

7. Your spouse hasn’t sworn/eaten ice cream/indulged in whatever they consider to be their bad habit for over a week.

8. People have stopped sending you tweets, instagrams and Facebook posts of their darling pets wearing antlers or Santa hats.

9. The cookie stockpile is dwindling.

10. You have sworn off making New Year’s Resolutions. Again.

What’s the number one sign that the New Year has arrived at YOUR house?

  • Easter eggs are on the shelves and my local super market.

    • Shel Harrington

      Really? Won’t they be . . . a little OLD by Easter??

  • These are great – so true. Around here it’s probably my “OK we are going to stop leaving clutter everywhere” campaign. I’m especially hot this year because after our Great Clean and Purge this summer, I am determined not to let the ADHD in this house take over again!
Oh, yeah, and I’m not making resolutions again and I’m going to finally exercise more and lose weight.

I’m so with you, Lisa – I thought this year instead of resolving to do it, I would try something different and just do it!! (Check back with me in November on that!)

  • That list is just cute & made me smile. . . Been married 42 years!

    • Shel Harrington

42 years??!!! Where on earth do they allow 7-year-olds to get married?? Congratulations, Tricia!

  • For us, #5 is a combination of half the frig is filled with rich leftovers from our tradition Day After New Year’s Day neighborhood brunch. The other half is packed with healthy fresh foods. Our healthy eating truly begins on Jan. 3 or 4, when we empty out the brunch leftovers and fun the garbage disposal at full speed.

I think transitioning into the New Year/new (temporary?) habits is much more reasonable than going cold turkey! (Please forgive the bad pun – I just couldn’t help myself!)

  • I have a new stack of craft books to study for the year. 🙂

    • Shel Harrington

Ooooooo – that’s a sign I could sink my teeth into, Jill! What’s on your craft agenda?

      • My focus for the next few months will be on crafting characters and….plotting! Yes me, the certified pantser. 🙂 I found a great book called, Making a Scene. I’ll let you know how it goes.

        • Shel Harrington

Oh – books on THE craft! I was picturing some of my own favorite crafts like painted rocks or polymer people! Confession: I didn’t know what “pantser” was so I looked it up. Except I accidentally put in “pantser” and was shocked! I thought about sending you a private message on it, but rechecked the spelling first. Oooooooo, pantser – MUCH better – I can totally relate to that one!!

          • Ha ha! Sorry I scared you for a moment.
No, my sister is the “crafty” one…draws, paints, makes greeting cards…I only write, and work jigsaw puzzles. 🙂

  • This list is great! I couldn’t agree more with so many of those 😀

    • Shel Harrington

Thanks, Kenzie! May I assume your Christmas lights are still up?! Happy New Year!

  • The pile stacked for trash grows. This is the time of year every hormone in me is tired of winter, tired of clutter, and tired of a year’s worth of dust. Inbred I suppose from the days of my mother’s spring housecleaning.

The day after January 1st my grumpy arrives and I am determined to set right everything that’s been out-of-order, out-of-place, goes out-the-door. Don’t you wish you were here? And the fact it’s been gray and gloomy in Dallas for almost a month doesn’t help.

But the sun is supposed to appear on Thursday, the trash folks come on Wednesday and maybe…just maybe Friday everything will lapse back into normal for another year. 🙂

    • Shel Harrington

I thought about waiting until Thursday to check in with you, but then I got brave and decided to touch base sooner. The sun is almost here, DiAne! For now, I assume you’ll have to rely on your husband for sunshine inside the house! Dare I say it? HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

  • The homework, the basketball games, the ballet- it’s all BACK! And with this weather, who has time ti take down lights! Happy New Year!

    • Shel Harrington

I bet the house is a little quieter during the day, too! We not only still have the lights up, my husband delights me by actually turning them on on nights I get home late. Hey – it’s only January!
